I shared this tournament week with family and friends. It has been a whirlwind 10 days with lots of dinners and cookouts and lots of questions about my work in the Peace Corps. My assignment is with an agency that deals with HIV/AIDS. Education is the main focus and programs are presented in the public schools and medical clinics.

I live in the capital city, more comfortable than the younger Peace Corps volunteers that are assigned to the hinterland do. My work is rewarding and the Surinamese people are kind and good. The Dutch language is not easy to learn, however, English is the second language.

I will complete my service in August of 2005, and it is a very good feeling to represent my country as a Peace Corps volunteer.

As I make my plans to return to Suriname, I say three cheers for Meg Mallon, for the Orchards Golf Club and its members, for MHC, for all the volunteers, for Elisabeth Skinner and Donald Ross for this gem of a golf course, and for the beautiful weekend weather.

I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

Nancy O’Connell, who used to do the Fairway Notebook for The Pilot, is in the middle of a two-year Peace Corps mission in Suriname. She returned to her former hometown in Massachusetts to cover the U.S. Women’s Open. She moved to Whispering Pines in the mid-1990s, where she lived until entering the Peace Corps last year.
