WASHINGTON, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has awarded seven new Knight International Press Fellowships and a McGee Journalism Fellowship in Southern Africa to veteran journalists to train colleagues in countries where there is little tradition of a free press.
Incoming Fellows will be honored at a reception tonight in Washington, D.C. These journalists have worked with news organizations such as CNN International, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times. Fellows will be based in countries as diverse as Sierra Leone and Kazakhstan, and two returning Fellows will also conduct a series of workshops for Arab journalists in Lebanon and Jordan.
"The newest group of Knight Fellows are highly experienced print and broadcast journalists with a wide range of international experience," said Knight Director Donatella Lorch. "The impact of their work will be felt from Asia to Africa to the Middle East."
Knight Fellows typically spend three to nine months abroad teaching, training, consulting and providing media assistance in Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa. The fellowship program is in its 11th year. These seven new Knight fellows join a corps of 175 former fellows:
Merle Geline Rubine broke through the gender barriers at CBS and NBC and became one of the first female producers at those networks. She worked on a variety of programs including "NewsCenter 4," "TODAY," "Dateline NBC" and documentaries. In 2000, Rubine joined the Peace Corps serving as a volunteer in Cote d'Ivoire for two years. Afterward, Rubine returned to Africa, this time to Tanzania, to teach and train the production and reporting staff of a youth-oriented talk program. Rubine will spend nine months in Sierra Leone.
