WASHINGTON -- Westport Democrat Diane Farrell is giving Connecticut's Rep. Christopher Shays a run for the money, making the race for the 4th District Congressional seat the most competitive in the state so far this year.

In response to the aggressive challenge from Farrell, Shays has raised $1 million as of the end of June, more money than he's ever collected in an election. To date Farrell has raised more than $720,000.

"This report illustrates the depth and breadth of our local grass roots support," Farrell said. "The vast majority of our donors are contributors of $100 or less from families in the district eager for change. They know that Chris Shays is increasingly supporting the Republican agenda in Washington instead of Connecticut families' priorities."

In the latest Federal Election Commission filing, covering the span from April 21 to June 20, Shays _ a nine-term Republican incumbent _ raised about $360,000, and Farrell was close behind with $320,000.

"We are very proud of our fund-raising in this period," said campaign manager Michael Sohn. "It is a testament to Christopher's experience and independence over the last 17 years."

In other races in the state, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., raised closed to $539,000 in the second quarter, ending with $4.2 million in cash on hand, overwhelming his GOP challenger's total.

Anyone know of a good reason to vote for Diane Farrell except for the fact that Chris Shays is technically a Republican? Much as I would love to diminish the GOP's power, esp. Tom DeLay et al, Shays doesn't vote lock-step with the party, has actually done a lot of good things in Congress, and has one of the highest ratings of any congressmen (D or R) by the League of Conservation Voters (95%). The only specific issue that I have heard Farrell disagree with him seems like a D-R roll reversal: Shays supports RAISING gas taxes, and Farrell criticized him for that!
