Mayor Announces DPR Partnership with Peace Corps

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony Williams will join the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington (RPCVW) and the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) to announce a new partnership between the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and former Peace Corps volunteers that aims to revitalize some of the departments underserved recreation centers and playgrounds. Four Recreation Centers and playgrounds will be visited and renovated on Saturday, June 9, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The four sites that will be seeded, painted, and planted are Upshur Recreation Center, Joseph H. Cole Recreation Center, Lamond Recreation Center, and Parkview Community Center.

“At my Youth Summit last year, our young people told me they wanted places to go after school?places where they were safe and amongst their peers. Today, we’re delivering for the District’s youth,” commented Mayor Williams. “With partnerships such as this one with the National Peace Corps Association and Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington, we will be able to make good on our pledge to provide our youth with clean and healthy environments and positive activities that encourage them to grow as athletes, scholars, and people.”

The twelve o’clock announcement by the Mayor will highlight the days’ renovation activities, after which the Mayor will join DPR Acting Director Neil Albert, Joel Rubin (Community Service Chairman, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington, DC), Barbara Ferris (Chair, Peace Corps 40th Anniversary Conference), Maureen Orth (NPCA Steering Committee), and activity volunteers by helping them to clean up and renovate the grounds and building at the Upshur Recreation Center. The center is located at 14th Street and Arkansas Avenue, NW.

“The Peace Corps has sent more than 160,000 Americans to serve as volunteers overseas during the past 40 years; this translates into more than 300,000 years of volunteer service around the globe,” adds Maureen Orth. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to bring the enthusiasm and skills that we learned overseas back home to Washington, DC. And we are very proud to be partnering with the Mayor’s Office, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, and community members to renovate these four Recreation Centers for the benefit of the children of Washington, DC.”
