Nigerian Suffering

Re "Criticism Starts at Home" (column, Aug. 5):
Wole Soyinka serves as a beacon of light in a country where poverty and desperation reign.
Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s column took me back to 1992, when I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria. I remember sitting at the feet of a Nigerian tribal chief, who was surrounded by the local imams, pleading with them to allow the polio vaccine to be distributed in their area.
It is heartbreaking to see that 12 years later, that same struggle is going on and that thousands of children are now dragging their crippled bodies through the muddy streets of Nigerian towns thanks to the foolishness of their religious leaders.
