Cody Blume paints in a portion of a map he and his students painted in the 7,000-resident town of Abong-Mbang, Cameroon, Africa.
BROOKSTON — Former Brookston Prairie Township Public Library employee and Peace Corps volunteer Cody Blume has taught English (or American, as they call it) in Abong-Mbang, Cameroon, Africa, for over a year and a half.
He found out while teaching that his students had never seen a map of the world, and had little idea of how Cameroon related to the rest of the world. Blume wanted to leave a legacy for his students of a map of the world.
He realized that if he left a paper map, it would disappear since paper is so precious in the poor country. He decided he wanted to paint one for his students.
He requested assistance from Psi Iota Xi sorority’s Chi Chapter in Brookston, which agreed to give him $50 for paint and brushes. He and his students painted the map of the world outside of their school. They did a great job, and had enough left to paint more maps inside.
Blume, an alumni of Indiana State University, is a 1997 graduate of Frontier High School. He attends Indiana University, where he has been admitted to the graduate program of the School of Library and Information Science.
He is the son of Robin and Kent Blume of rural Brookston.
