Appelhanz named spokeswoman -- Christie Appelhanz has joined the staff of Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan., as communications director. Appelhanz will serve as Moore's primary spokeswoman with the news media and public.

She replaces Jack Martin, who recently accepted a position as an account executive for McNeely Pigott & Fox Public Relations in Nashville.

Appelhanz comes to Moore's staff from Kansas Action for Children, where she served as media relations specialist. Before working for the statewide child advocacy organization, she taught economics and English to high school students as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Poltava, Ukraine.

After graduating from The University of Kansas, Appelhanz worked three years as a business reporter at The Topeka Capital-Journal. She left that position to manage a voter education campaign for the Kansas Sierra Club in Lenexa.

Appelhanz will be based in Moore's Overland Park office. Hayley Rumback will continue to serve as Moore's deputy communications director in Washington, D.C.
