Morocco RPCV Ronald Peter Ciras talks about unemployment and the war time economy

The War Time Economy

In these troubling times , times of high unemployment and war , that we must decide what is important in our lives . Whether you are for or against the war is up to you. But , I find it troubling that world leaders continue to look at things that tear us apart , rather than , those things that bring us together .

In 1977-1978 , I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Marachech, Morocco so I know a little about how the Arab mind works. In Morocco, in certain cities , you could only go shopping on day a week because that was the only time that they were open . If, you didn't have money for food then , you were out of luck for a week ! Imagine that happening in America !! In a city like Marachech , the markets were open everyday but the items had no price tags on them . So , you would have to barter for everything you bought. Usually, the original price would be double what the product was worth and sometimes it would take hours to get the said item down to its original price . Imagine if that happened in America ?

In Morocco, which is a moderate Islamic country , there was a call to prayer seemingly 12 times a day. This call filled the whole country and everyone stopped what they were doing at all the of day and night to pray. Everyday of their lives .Everyone had to know by heart everyword of the Koran just to be accepted in everyday Moroccan life . Women walked behind men and were covered with veils so that the only thing the world would see of these women were there eyes .

This week I decided that maybe I cannot find a job for myself after a year of looking because I am trying to change the world , instead of, trying to change myself . I think that I have been trying to change somewhat but I cannot give up my past .And during my jobhunt I have found that my past is not accepted in the present since no one has hired me.

But, I can't change my past , it is my past that has made me who I am today . That is why I must still battle on to fight on until I have no fight left in me . Or , until I achieve victory with a job.

I wish you all luck in finding work and to our brave soldiers whose bravery will help us remain free .

Teresa Heinz Kerry celebrates the Peace Corps Volunteer as one of the best faces America has ever projected in a speech to the Democratic Convention. The National Review disagreed and said that Heinz's celebration of the PCV was "truly offensive." What's your opinion and who can come up with the funniest caption for our Current Events Funny?

Exclusive: Director Vasquez speaks out in an op-ed published exclusively on the web by Peace Corps Online saying the Dayton Daily News' portrayal of Peace Corps "doesn't jibe with facts."
