WASHINGTON, D.C., August 12, 2004 — Director Gaddi H. Vasquez recently announced that Obie Shaw has been named the new Peace Corps Country Director for Mauritania.

Shaw’s past experience includes positions in the private, non-profit, and government sectors. Since July 2001, Shaw has served with Peace Corps/Mauritania as the associate director for Small Enterprise Development and Information and Communication Technology programs.

Previously, Shaw worked as the managing director for news and information services with Africa.com in Chapel Hill, N.C., as a Senior Analyst with the USAID-funded African Global Infrastructure Project (Leland Initiative) in Washington, D.C. He has also worked as an English language officer with the Office of Language Services at the U.S. State Department.

Shaw served as a Peace Corps volunteer for five years, first teaching math in the Central African Republic from 1990-1993 and then in youth development Agent in Tunisia from 1993-1995. He worked as a program officer and as the executive assistant to the vice president for three years with the African-American Institute in Washington, D.C., and also served on several election monitoring missions with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Born in Alamogordo, Shaw is currently a resident of Quartz Hill, Calif., but has lived in many regions of the United States including Texas, Louisiana, Utah, and Washington D.C. Shaw is an alumnus of the University of Utah-Salt Lake City, with degrees in economics, political science, and French. While attending school, Shaw served with the U.S. Air Force Reserves at Hill Air Force Base, Utah.

The country director is the senior Peace Corps official in the country of assignment. As such, the country director is responsible for the overall management and direction of all aspects of Peace Corps programs in that country.

The country director is responsible for supporting volunteers as they live and work, overseeing the in-country support staff and budget, and analysis and implementation of all Peace Corps programming and projects. The country director also acts as the senior Peace Corps representative in country.

Since 1961, more than 171,000 volunteers have served in the Peace Corps, working in such diverse fields as education, health, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, information technology, business development, the environment, and agriculture. Peace Corps volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a two-year commitment.
