OhioReads is working.

Proof lies in the fact Ohio Gov. Bob Taft's program now includes more than 50,000 tutors serving 150,000 students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

The governor had an upbeat message, but with a caveat.

"Reading scores are on the rise, but the fact remains that one out of every four children in Ohio cannot read at a proficient level by the end of the third grade," Taft said.

Therein lies a problem we all must address, whether we are directly in the education field, a parent or a business owner.

Reading scores must improve, and it's up to the community at large to help.

For more information on the OhioReads program, call 1(888) OHIOREADS. In the '70s and '80s, it was common to see commercials with the slogan, "Reading Is Fundamental." That was true when it was launched, and it's still true in 2004.

Our nation's future depends on a literate workforce. Reading at the elementary-school level builds a foundation for success in life.

Become a part of that success by promoting reading in your home and in your school.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
