(CPOD) Sept. 13, 2004 – Public support for Alejandro Toledo has increased in Peru, according to a poll by Datum Internacional. 15 per cent of respondents in Lima and El Callao approve of the president’s performance, an eight per cent increase since June.

Toledo was elected in a run-off on Jun. 3, 2001. In July, a report in Peruvian newsmagazine Caretas alleged that Toledo received $5 million U.S. after the takeover of beer company Bavaria in 2002. The president invited regulators and auditors to probe his "personal and conjugal" bank accounts "in the name of transparency."

On Aug. 7, Toledo inaugurated the Camisea gas plant in Peru’s southern coast, a project expected to generate $300 million U.S. a year in exports of butane and propane.

Methodology: Interviews to 410 Peruvian adults in Lima and El Callao, conducted from Sept. 4 to Sept. 6, 2004. Margin of error is 5 per cent.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children."
