WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- In advance of the first Bush-Kerry Presidential debate, to be held on her campus September 30, University of Miami President Donna Shalala says, "Students are so excited, they are beside themselves," and that this atmosphere suggests a new permanent level of student interest in politics. And John D. Wiley, Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says: "It's quite a striking contrast to anything in my memory, and I've been here 30 years. The last time I remember this degree of domestic political engagement of Wisconsin students was in the Vietnam era in the 60s."

The two spoke in exclusive interviews with Bisnow on Business, carried by The Hill newspaper in the PolicyWonk Weekly, published each week to Congressmen, staffs, and others on Capitol Hill.

But Shalala, who was Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Clinton, notes that there is very little "anti-establishment" sentiment as there was in the Vietnam era. In fact, she says that Republican political consultant Mary Matalin, who came recently to the university to speak, "told me when she was here that she was tired of going onto college campuses where guys with gray hair and pony tails asked her outrageous questions!"
