Getting Presidential Debate To Miami Took Work

MIAMI -- The University of Miami, known for its academics and sports programs, is now taking a stab at politics by hosting the first 2004 presidential debate.

NBC 6's Jackie Nespral sat down with university President Donna Shalala to find out how she got the candidates to come to the Magic City and how this event will have an effect on the university and South Florida.

NBC 6: "So, this is the first time that a presidential debate will be held in the state of Florida. You've been lobbying for this since 2001. How did you do it?"

Shalala: "At my going away party from Washington I ran into Janet Brown, who is head of the presidential debate commission, and I said, 'Janet, I want to get the debate for the University of Miami.' She said, 'When you get there, call me and I'll tell you how to apply.'"

After writing a lengthy proposal and campaigning for private funding, Shalala succeeded in bringing the major event to the UM campus. But, she says it wasn't easy.

NBC 6: "The fact that you were secretary of Health and Human Services under the Clinton administration, do you think that helped or hindered you?"

Shalala: "It was probably a negative because this is seen as a bipartisan event, but I prevailed upon Gov. (Jeb) Bush to support our application. And since no other Florida school was applying, he certainly did support our proposal. So we had a bipartisan proposal."

Political parties aside, Shalala sees this event as a huge image booster for the area and a chance to shine four years after Florida's infamous voting fiasco.

Shalala: "I think it's an opportunity for all of South Florida, for all of Florida. It's a feather in our cap. It obviously gives us international publicity. It talks not only about the university but about the state of Florida and gives us the opportunity to show off."

NBC 6: "How has the community offered support in hosting the debate?"

Shalala: "Every mayor has volunteered their police force -- the city of Miami, the county, the city of Coral Gables, the city of South Miami, the Secret Service. It has really been a wonderful community effort on security and a community effort on the business community. We're going to occupy a lot of hotel rooms I hope it'll be very good for our community."

NBC 6: "The event is just hours away. Are you ready?"

Shalala: "We're ready. We're the 'canes and we're ready."

While politicians, members of the press and a select few supporters will attend the debate, Shalala will not be among them. She gave up her seat so more students would be able to attend, because she says the debate is really for the students.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
