LHS set to honor five prominent graduates

LOWELL Five Lowell High School alumni will be honored next month for their achievements and contributions to their community.

Chosen as the first Lowell High School Distinguished Alumni are: the late beat novelist Jack Kerouac, class of 1939; pharmaceutical businessman George Behrakis, class of 1951; the late U.S. Sen. and one-time Democratic presidential candidate Paul Tsongas, class of 1958; and entrepreneurs and philanthropists Elkin and Donna McCallum, class of 1961.

The new program, created and organized by LHS graduates, is designed to raise community awareness of the greatness the school has produced since opening nearly 175 years ago.

"Lowell High School started in 1831, and its history is unbelievable," Headmaster Bill Samaras said. "People sometimes don't understand that it's steeped in tradition and success."

Other prominent LHS graduates include U.S. Rep. Marty Meehan, Batman series actor Neil Hamilton (he played Commissioner Gordon), television personality Ed McMahon, artist Charles Demitropolis and top America Online executive Ted Leonsis.

Jim Moriarty, vice president/manager of Enterprise Bank insurance services, graduated with the class of 1973. He served on the program's selection committee.

"I'd match my class from '73 with any Ivy League school," he said. "When you see what (alumni) have done for their community, their church, their school, you say, 'Wow.'"

Creators of the Distinguished Alumni Award program accepted the first round of nominations in July. They received 18 applications.

Those nominated must have graduated or attended Lowell High School at least 20 years ago; demonstrated substantial life achievement; made a significant contribution to the community in which he or she lives; and engaged in activities engendering pride as a Lowell High School alumnus.

The chosen alumni will be honored at a reception scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the high school's Cyrus W. Irish Auditorium. Culinary-arts students will serve food to guests, and other students will offer tours around the school. Each distinguished alumnus, or someone on his or her behalf, will have an opportunity to speak.

The event is also an attempt to attract the attention of potential donors. LHS is in the middle of the Campaign for Educational Excellence, a fund-raising effort seeking $5 million for the high school.

Tickets for the award reception are $50. They are available at Lowell High School by contacting Gail Green at (978) 937-8964, or by contacting Brenda Costello at (978) 970-1600.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
