BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --
Republican Congressman Chris Shays has pulled a campaign television spot over some questions about possible campaign law violations.
The spot features former NBA player Charles Smith praising Shays for his support of Smith's foundation's education center in Bridgeport.
Shays said his campaign decided to pull the ad after the Connecticut Post raised concerns that it could violate Internal Revenue Service rules barring nonprofit charities from electioneering.
The TV spot was paid for and sponsored by Shays' campaign. Smith said that he had not intended that the ad be seen as an endorsement by the foundation, but rather as his personal view.
The Fourth District Congressman is being challenged by Westport First Selectman Diane Farrell.
