PLEASANTON -- A Pleasanton woman who planned to work in Nepal as a Peace Corps volunteer likely will be assigned to another country.

Heather Hosterman, 23, was to have departed Oct. 4 for two years of service in Nepal. But the Peace Corps announced Monday that it was suspending its program in Nepal because of worries about safety and security.

The U.S. Embassy in Nepal also requested that some staff and their family members be allowed to return home after two small bombs were detonated Friday at the U.S. information center in the capital, Katmandu, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Maoist rebels who have fought Nepal's government since 1996 are suspected in the attacks.

The Peace Corps has nearly 90 volunteers in Nepal, the BBC said.

"The safety and security of the volunteer is the No. 1 priority of the Peace Corps and in light of the current conditions in Nepal, suspension of the program is a necessary action," said Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez.

Heather's mother, Pleasanton City Councilwoman Jennifer Hosterman, said, "Minus the political upheaval, Nepal would have been the ideal choice." Her daughter's second choice for an assignment was Thailand.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
