MADISON -- Al Franken and co-host Katherine Lanpher spoke with Gov. Jim Doyle and U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin about prescription drugs and health care this afternoon at the Great Hall of the UW Memorial Union, as part of Air America’s popular program, “The Al Franken Show”.

[Excerpt]

Franken’s next guest, Gov. Jim Doyle, slammed the Bush administration for allegedly being closely tied to big U.S. drug companies.

“They were faced with making a choice between the American people and the pharmaceutical industry,” said Doyle, adding that they chose the latter -- not allowing re-importation of drugs.

Doyle mentioned a recent study out of Boston, which indicated that the re-importation issue resulted in a “$139 billion windfall for drug companies,” he said.

Confronting the issue of whether the U.S. pharmaceutical industry had been doing their part, Doyle said, “when the anthrax scares hit, we didn’t have enough Cipro,” asking, “where did we go to get it...Canada.”

Franken also gave the governor the opportunity to address the Medicare issue, saying, “It takes a lot of hard work to pass a Medicare bill that makes things worse.“

“Yeah. you got to work on Saturdays and Sundays,” quipped Doyle.

Katherine Lanpher closed out the interview by lauding Doyle’s good nature – saying “the governor made a funny!”

-- The Sundance Channel will air the show at 10:30 p.m. CST on Thursday, October 7, 2004. Air America’s liberal radio network recently added a Madison affiliate, WXXM 92.1 FM. See the WXXM Web site: http://www.madisonmix.com/main.html

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children."
