Sugarcane Harvest

Sugarcane Harvest

It's that time of the year again when Louisiana sugar cane farmers are busy harvesting their crops.
But they may be running into problems that could turn their sugar harvest a bit sour.

Production appears to be going well at the St. Martinville Sugarcane cooperative, but state officials are saying they expect this years harvest to be lower than usual.

Farmer Charlie Lavert blames the negative outlook on mother nature. He says "if the rain doesn't fall its a blessing, everything goes real good but when we the rain starts falling we have all kind of problems."

Officials say another problem farmers face is the free trade agreement the government has with foreign countries. Sugarcane Cooperative General Manager Jackie Theriot had this to say "its just unwise for our administration to be sending our jobs oversea's. And that's gonna be a key issue in the election this year. And we feel their out souring our jobs in the sugarcane industry".

The Louisiana sugarcane co-op in Saint Martin Parish brings in about "50-million" dollars every year. Statewide, the industry rakes in more than a "billion" annually.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
