Party faithful make time to volunteer

But whatever their political views, volunteers in both parties fill many of the same mundane roles: making telephone calls, writing letters, organizing events and stuffing envelopes.

On the Democratic side, a handful of volunteers have also traveled to swing states in the region, trying to sway voters there to support Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards.

"The Democrats are really strongly energized," said Stuart Coan, 81, a longtime Democratic party volunteer who was making phone calls along with Jankowich . "They're energized in a way they haven't been in a long time."

Most Republicans, meanwhile, are keeping their eyes squarely focused on voters around town. The party is planning to distribute coffee and campaign literature to Metro-North commuters three times in the next month and is planning a rally for invited guests on Oct. 16.

But with the election less than a month away, most volunteers would not hazard a guess about the outcome of either the House or presidential election. Moshier said she has heard speculation that the House race between Farrell, first selectwoman in Westport, and U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Bridgeport, will be very close.

"My answer to that is that we have to work hard between now and election day to make sure Chris Shays is elected," she said.
