Mortar Board to Honor Pat Huckle, Jerry Ledin
By Amanda Padilla

The Mortar Board will honor Patricia Huckle and Jerry Ledin at this year’s Nineteenth Annual Emeritus Administrators, Faculty and Staff Award Ceremony on Saturday, November 6th, at 10:30 a.m. in front of the College of Education.

This award, to be presented by President Stephen Weber, recognizes retired faculty, staff and administrators who have given themselves to SDSU, its students and its community.

[Excerpt]

Jerry Ledin, also a Mortar Board honoree, has worked for the past 23 years in Human Resource Management at SDSU, and retired in September 1998.

While on campus, he served on the boards and committees of the San Diego Kidney Foundation, the San Diego Aids Project, the Combined Health Agencies Drive, the Faculty/Staff Center at SDSU and the National Conference for Community and Justice.

"Jerry was a magnificent contributor to the SDSU community," said Sue Blair, associate vice president for Human Resources/RIS. "He always made a difference, one person at a time. "I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award than Jerry Ledin."

Earlier in his life, Ledin was a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia where he learned Spanish, served on town councils and school boards, taught health education in grade schools and high schools, developed training material and trained future volunteers for the program.

Since retiring, Ledin has been active in many organizations including the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, the Residents' Association of Costa Rica, the Costa Rican North American Cultural Center, the American Colony Committee, the Scholarship Program of the Women’s Club of Costa Rica, the SDSU Retirement Association and the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
