(1010 WINS) (WASHINGTON) Sen. Christopher Dodd's October surprise has nothing to do with his run for re-election.

Instead, Friday, he and his wife Jackie announced they will be having their second child next March.

"In addition to having a very successful legislative session, and hopefully a successful election, I'm looking forward to an expanding family in March," said Dodd, 60.

The four-term Connecticut senator said he has told family and friends, but just decided to make the news public.

Their first child, Grace, was born in September 2001, in the tumultuous aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But Dodd said so far he doesn't know whether they are having a boy or a girl.

"He doesn't like to know. I like to know. So I have to keep secrets," said Clegg, 42, with a laugh. And when Dodd observed that he'll have to watch what color patterns she's buying, she quipped that she won't be buying anything right away.

"It keeps it a secret a little bit longer," she said. "We all need surprises in life."

Dodd, who is seeking a fifth term in the Senate, married Clegg in June 1999, after dating her for the better part of a decade.

They split their time between their Capitol Hill town house and their riverfront home in East Haddam.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
