Greensboro News & Record

WINSTON-SALEM Eleanor Beasley Dodson died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center, after suffering a brain aneurysm.

The family will hold a memorial service on Sunday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. 5th St. in Winston- Salem. A reception will follow in the church auditorium.

Born in Louisburg, N.C., she graduated from Duke University in 1947, with a B.S.N. She moved to Winston-Salem in 1957, with her husband, Taylor, a professor at Wake Forest University. During her career, she worked as a private-duty nurse, a nursing instructor at NC Baptist School of Nursing, as an administrator for various social programs with the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County schools, and as night-duty nurse at Bermuda Village. She volunteered briefly in the Peace Corps and served in Costa Rica. An active member of Centenary United Methodist Church, she was a mainstay in its Whitefield class and Womens Society of Christian Service Circle 1. From childhood, she loved and cared for animals, even feeding the birds on her window sill after moving into a retirement home.

She leaves many friends, young and old.

She is survived by one brother, Glenn Beasley of Charlotte, and her children and their families: Lu Dodson and Billy Malear of Big Sur, Calif., Ed and Kitti Dodson of Oak Ridge, and Lee and Alice Dodson; a grandson, Taylor; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Willa and Mark Sackfield; and one great-granddaughter, Zoe Carroll Sackfield, all of Madison.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, the Humane Society, or other charitable organizations.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
