(Bridgeport-WTNH, Oct. 14, 2004 Updated 6:15 PM) _ The Democratic challenger in Connecticut's 4th District appears to be narrowing the gap against Congressman Christopher Shays. A new UConn poll out shows Shays and Diane Farrell in a real competitive race.

Democratic challenger Diane Farrell was ecstatic today at an event in Bridgeport. The first public opinion poll of the district actually shows her doing better than her own internal polling which had showed her 10 points back. The University of Connecticut poll of likely voters shows her within 7 points ahead of incumbent Republican Congressman Christopher Shays.
"People are thinking more about the presidential race than they are about the congressional race in the 4 Congressional District," says Ken Dautrich, University of Connecticut. "What we're finding is that Kerry is running ahead of Bush by about 12 points so there is some coat-tail effect."
In her television advertising Farrell has attempted to portray Shays as an ever increasing supporter of the Republican majority in Congress and President Bush.
Shays advertising has emphasized his independence, but Farrell thinks his recent vote for a huge corporate tax break shows that independence is a myth.
"It's another example of being an enabler and being in lockstep with a leadership that just does not have the best interest of the citizens of the 4th district at heart," Farrell said.
"Well, Joe Lieberman and I both voted for that bill and the reason we voted for it is because it will make our companies more competitive overseas and it will encourage overseas companies to produce in the United States," Shays said.
The UConn poll shows Christopher Shays with a 73 percent favorable approval rating. 62 percent of likely voters gave him a good job rating. Yet his Democratic challenger is only seven points back.
Shays told me late this afternoon he is preparing two speeches for election night.
