HARTFORD (AP) - Arizona Senator John McCain is in Connecticut today, campaigning for Republican Congressmen Rob Simmons and Chris Shays.
McCain says it's unfair that Democrats are trying to portray both congressmen as die-hard supporters of the Republican leadership in Washington, D.C. He says both men are independent-minded and often vote against the party when they believe it's the right thing to do.
Both Simmons' opponent, Jim Sullivan, and Shays' opponent, Diane Farrell, are claiming the two incumbents vote too often with the right-wing of the Republican Party and their out of touch with the districts.
Connecticut is typically seen as a more politically liberal state than other parts of the country.
Meanwhile, Rahm Emanuel, an Illinois congressman and a former Clinton adviser, is in the state campaigning for Sullivan and Farrell.

Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
