Briefs from the Connecticut campaign trail

DANBURY, Conn. -- U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd used his Spanish-speaking abilities on Wednesday to stump for himself, congressional candidate Theresa Gerratana and state Rep. Bob Godfrey at a Hispanic community center in Danbury.

Dodd, who learned to speak Spanish while in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic, rolled out the jokes as he trilled his R's for the group who came to see him.

Hispanics are the fastest-growing segment of the state's population, especially in the 5th Congressional District, where Gerratana hopes to unseat U.S. Rep. Nancy Johnson.

The three Democrats heard from community activists about problems that some Hispanics are having getting driver's licenses. They also said that many contractors are taking advantage of undocumented aliens by hiring them to work on landscaping or other jobs, and then refusing to pay them.

Dodd, D-Conn., said he would support changing immigration laws to allow for "visiting workers" status, so that people who come to the United States to work on farms or on other jobs can get help with such problems.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., will take another quick detour from his own Senate race Thursday and travel to New Hampshire to campaign again for Democrat John Kerry. He did a day of campaigning last Friday in Pennsylvania for the presidential contender, and he may go to Florida next week.

Dodd, who is seeking a fifth term, will speak to students at St. Anselm's College in Manchester Thursday morning, then head to a forum at a local Manchester restaurant, where he will speak to a Latino community gathering. Dodd also will be headlining a luncheon fund-raiser for Democrat Ray Buckley, who is running for the Executive Council, a five-member advisory board to the governor.

The Kerry campaign wants the RPCV vote. Read our interview with Dave Magnani, Massachusetts State Senator and Founder of "RPCVs for Kerry," and his answers to our questions about Kerry's plan to triple the size of the Peace Corps, should the next PC Director be an RPCV, and Safety and Security issues. Then read the "RPCVs for Kerry" statement of support and statements by Dr. Robert Pastor, Ambassador Parker Borg, and Paul Oostburg Sanz made at the "RPCVs for Kerry" Press Conference.

RPCV Carl Pope says the key to winning this election is not swaying undecided voters, but persuading those already willing to vote for your candidate to actually go to the polls.

Take our poll and tell us what you are doing to support your candidate.

Finally read our wrap-up of the eight RPCVs in Senate and House races around the country and where the candidates are in their races.

Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention
Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it. Teresa Heinz Kerry celebrates the Peace Corps Volunteer as one of the best faces America has ever projected in a speech to the Democratic Convention. The National Review disagreed and said that Heinz's celebration of the PCV was "truly offensive." What's your opinion and can you come up with a Political Funny?
