The U.S. State Department has announced a volunteer exchange program that will have 50 Russian and American community leaders traveling abroad. The program — called U.S.-Russia Volunteer Initiative — aims to deepen partnership between the two countries.

This November and December, 50 young American and Russian community leaders will be sent as volunteers to communities in the other country for five weeks of service focusing on HIV/AIDS awareness, providing information and communication technologies to needy areas, and the preservation of cultural heritage sites, a U.S. Embassy press release said.

Under the program, sponsored by the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, the volunteers will also have the opportunity to compete for small grants to support similar projects in their own communities after returning home.

The initiative was penned following a summit at Camp David between Presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin.

An official from the U.S. embassy press office told MosNews that the program is a response to Moscow’s decision to bar Peace Corps activists in Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced in December 2002 that it would no longer allow members of the Peace Corps in Russia amid allegations of espionage, but that it would welcome other forms of partnership “more in line with today’s needs”.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
