Our Program exists to help inner city children become more capable, competent and better citizens through tennis. We emphasize mutual encouragement among the players, and urge our instructors to teach self control and perseverance by work and example. We engage adults to volunteer as "tennis mentors" to establish individual relationships with some of the children.

We have operated for the past 6 years on tennis courts which happen to be immediately adjacent to two of the largest properties of the Norwalk Housing Authority. Last year, 238 children participated. Almost all of them are residents of the Housing Authority projects. Almost all are members of minority groups. Everything is provided without charge....balls, racquets, instruction, competitions and occasional trips.

We have a paid staff of qualified instructors. The Program Director is a former singles player for the University of Wisconsin, and former Assistant Coach of the Yale Men's varsity tennis team. He is a certified USPTA professional. Our Senior Site Director is a former coach of the Kenyan National Tennis Team, and is a certified instructor. Also instructing in the program is a part time tennis professional at a major local private club who grew up in one of the projects where he now teaches.

In addition to paid staff, we have been fortunate to attract 9 "mentors" who are business or professional people, some now retired, who are excellent players. They help the paid staff, and also are working to create an ongoing relationship, through tennis, with individual children.

Our program began as an effort funded by the Norwalk Housing Authority with Federal Drug Elimination moneys. These funds were only enough to pay for a 7 week summer session. To enlarge the program and bring its effects more importantly into the lives of the children, the Board decided to try to raise private funds to hire a year-round part time Program Director. This cost is funded by donations from the private sector. We are grateful for the support of all tennis players and others who are concerned with the welfare of inner city children.

If you would be interested in supporting our program by making a contribution or volunteering time as a mentor, or otherwise, please contact Art Goldblatt at 203-846-0591, 15 Eastwood Road, Norwalk, Connecticut 06851.

The Kerry campaign wants the RPCV vote. Read our interview with Dave Magnani, Massachusetts State Senator and Founder of "RPCVs for Kerry," and his answers to our questions about Kerry's plan to triple the size of the Peace Corps, should the next PC Director be an RPCV, and Safety and Security issues. Then read the "RPCVs for Kerry" statement of support and statements by Dr. Robert Pastor, Ambassador Parker Borg, and Paul Oostburg Sanz made at the "RPCVs for Kerry" Press Conference.

RPCV Carl Pope says the key to winning this election is not swaying undecided voters, but persuading those already willing to vote for your candidate to actually go to the polls.

Take our poll and tell us what you are doing to support your candidate.

Finally read our wrap-up of the eight RPCVs in Senate and House races around the country and where the candidates are in their races.

Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention
Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it. Peace Corps: One of the Best Faces of America Peace Corps: One of the Best Faces of America
Teresa Heinz Kerry celebrates the Peace Corps Volunteer as one of the best faces America has ever projected in a speech to the Democratic Convention. The National Review disagreed and said that Heinz's celebration of the PCV was "truly offensive." What's your opinion and can you come up with a Political Funny?
