Harry confident to keep his job whoever wins US polls
11/4/2004
US Ambassador Harry K Thomas Wesnesday said if President Bush wins the election, he will continue his engagement with South Asia and Bangladesh, as also would be the case if Senator Kerry won, reports UNB.
Talking to journalists at the American Center on the US presidential elections and the foreign policy of a new president, he said President Bush had already spoken about his policy and " I would expect many of them would continue if he is still president… Clearly you know he (Bush) is not the one to easily change his mind."
On Dhaka-Washington relations, Harry mentioned recent high-level visits by Secretary Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the USAID Administrator and the VOA Director, reflecting the strength of bilateral ties.
He said 48 more US Peace Corps volunteers would be sworn-in Sunday raising the total number of volunteers to over 100 in 57 districts of Bangladesh.
Besides, Harry pointed out that America is the single-largest trading partner and one of the largest donors to Bangladesh.
Replying to a query about possible visit to Dhaka by Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage while travelling to South Asia and Near East November 4-11, the envoy said laughing that he does not know about his trip to Dhaka.
He however said Deputy Assistant Secretary Torkel Patterson would be in Dhaka on November 8--his second tour in a couple of months.
Replying to a question about any strategic change in the US war on terror, the diplomat said both Bush and Kerry support successful prosecution of the war on terrorism.

| Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
