Julie Lana
Age: 35
School, grade and subject: ELL for grades 7-12 in Garfield School District No. 16
Family information: Single
Teaching experience: I've been teaching since 1992. I spent three years in the Peace Corps teaching English in an elementary school in Monor, Hungary. I got my master's in education then spent one year at a language school in Chisinau, Moldova, two years at a dual-language school in Balatonalmadi, Hungary, four years in a Jewish school in Budapest, Hungary, and since 2003 in Parachute.
Why are you a teacher? If you worked in another profession before teaching, why did you change? I love to see the "light bulb" go off above students' heads when they understand a concept. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you've helped someone accomplish something important.
What do you like most about teaching? The daily routine with the element of surprise
What do you do in your free time? I read as much as possible, dance, walk, spend time with friends, travel.
What's your favorite lesson to teach? They all have their moments.
What was your favorite teacher like? Very strict but very encouraging
What is something interesting about you that no one else knows? I used to perform with a Hungarian dance group.
If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be and who would you take with you? I'd travel the whole worlds if I could. If I have to narrow it down I'd go to Australia and New Zealand first. I'd take my closest friends.
What do you miss most about being a kid? Free time
