Scott Higbee, 37, civil engineer, has been with CH2M HILL for six years as a project manager for the global engineering and consulting company. He is an expert on water and waste-water issues. Higbee graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and received his master's degree in civil engineering from California State University at Long Beach. His experience includes a stint in the Peace Corps in Lesotho, Africa, where he helped bring water to unserved areas; water projects in Los Angeles; and water projects in Uzbekistan, where systems have been failing since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992.
Q What steps did you take to succeed?
A Set goals. Persevere. Develop a good work ethic.
Q What advice do you give to others on your path?
A Find the smartest person you can and make him or her your mentor. Learn all you can from that person. Then strike out on your own and stick with it.
Q Why El Paso?
A I love the city. The people of El Paso are what makes the city great.
Q How did you get interested in water?
A When I was growing up on a farm in Lamar, Colo., I admired ditch riders. They came, opened the water and chatted with everyone. I thought that must be a great job.
Q Most rewarding experience in the Peace Corps?
A We had just finished installing a drinking water facility in a rural area, securing it with concrete. Someone had etched the words "ithumaleng basotho" in the cement, which means "We did it ourselves." That's what the Peace Corps is all about, helping communities to help themselves.
