Jen Johnson (Gambia, 1999-2001) said the diplomacy she learned in the Peace Corps is an essential part of her job as the community liaison for the city of Fort Collins and Colorado State University.
Johnson, 27, worked as a teacher in a village of about 1,000 people. Part of her job was to travel into the countryside and present "Mr. Wizard-style" science programs in remote areas.
Adjusting to a different culture took a long time, she said, but it helped her develop a better sense of perspective and understanding, which is essential for conflict resolution.
She applies that skill now while mediating disputes between students and residents, who often come from "completely different points of view."
But she also stays involved as a volunteer teacher of English as a second language at the Education Life Training Center. Many of the volunteers at the center are Peace Corps veterans, she said.
"You just get drawn to being involved," she said. "You want to have a positive impact on your community."
