Ruth Lynn Katz, the executive director of a nonprofit organization, and Scott Mitchell Blakeman, a comedian, are to be married this evening. Rabbi Chava Koster is to officiate at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
The bride, 44, is the head of Just Food, which teaches city-dwellers about farming and advocates on behalf of small farmers. She graduated from Carleton College and received a master's degree in international development and social change from Clark University. She was a Peace Corps volunteer from 1982 to 1984, teaching high school English in Gabon. She is a daughter of Noreen G. Giles of Evanston, Ill., and the late Melvin Katz. Her father was an associate at Aaron, Aaron, Schimberg & Hess, a former law practice in Chicago. Her mother retired as a freelance writer and editor of educational materials, in Evanston.
Mr. Blakeman, 49, appears regularly at the Comic Strip in Manhattan, and performed his one-man political humor show, "Laughs From the Left," in August at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is a member of the Friars Club in Manhattan, where he performed last month, and teaches a stand-up comedy workshop at New School University.
The bridegroom is the son of Gloria Blakeman and Dr. Arthur H. Blakeman of Brooklyn. His mother retired as a reading and math specialist at Public School 52 in Brooklyn. His father retired as a dentist in private practice, also in Brooklyn.
