The Peace Corps attracts certain types of people, said Liz Buchanan (Namibia, 1994-96), a therapist at the Larimer Center for Mental Health.
In her experience, some were there for the travel, but most wanted to serve and make connections with other cultures.
In the process they learned a lot about the world and themselves, she said.
"They got so much more than they gave," she said.
Buchanan, 33, taught English at a boarding school in the bush more than 100 miles from the nearest town.
Namibia is a former colony of South Africa. The students and faculty she worked with had lived through apartheid, so gaining their trust took patience and empathy -- skills she still uses today while working with families caught up in the court system.
