Castro 'tentatively' accepts invite to campus
LEADERS: Cuban president slated to speak at Meany, Dec. 2.

Appropriately enough, the campus community won't have to pay a cent to host the world's most famous socialist leader - if the guest of honor decides to attend.
The Latin American Studies Program will allocate nearly 700 free tickets to students, faculty and staff for Cuban President Fidel Castro's as-yet unconfirmed Dec. 2 appearance in Meany Hall.
"If he comes to the WTO, we're pretty confident he'll come to speak on campus," said David Fenner.
The UW's director of International Programs and Exchanges said the University has been working behind the scenes to coordinate a possible Castro appearance since early autumn.
"[When] rumors surfaced about Castro attending the WTO conference our Latin studies program approached the president's office and urged them to extend a formal invitation for him to speak on campus," Fenner said..
"They did [and Castro] accepted, tentatively."
Castro's government has yet to announce whether he will lead the Cuban delegation to the World Trade Organization's Ministerial Conference, in Seattle, Nov. 29-Dec. 3, and Fenner said confirmation of the Meany Hall address could come as late as next Monday.
"[Still], everything needed to be prepared as if he were going to come and speak," he said.
So far, almost everything has.
# Meany Hall - which seats about 1,200 - has been reserved for the address, which would start at 8 p.m.
# Measures to distribute the 694 tickets for UW students, faculty and staff are in place and an overflow crowd of up to 700 can watch the address live in Kane Hall 130 (see separate story, same page).
# Security measures have been decided. Tickets are non-transferable and seating will be assigned. Doors will open at 5 p.m. (three hours before Castro is slated to appear) to allow for more thorough checks. There will be no re-entry and no electronic devices allowed.

Fenner described the visit as "potentially historic."
"It would be the first time Castro's given a speech in the United States outside of the United Nations, (since he became president of Cuba in 1959)" he said.

| Our debt to Bill Moyers Former Peace Corps Deputy Director Bill Moyers leaves PBS next week to begin writing his memoir of Lyndon Baines Johnson. Read what Moyers says about journalism under fire, the value of a free press, and the yearning for democracy. "We have got to nurture the spirit of independent journalism in this country," he warns, "or we'll not save capitalism from its own excesses, and we'll not save democracy from its own inertia." |
| Is Gaddi Leaving? Rumors are swirling that Peace Corps Director Vasquez may be leaving the administration. We think Director Vasquez has been doing a good job and if he decides to stay to the end of the administration, he could possibly have the same sort of impact as a Loret Ruppe Miller. If Vasquez has decided to leave, then Bob Taft, Peter McPherson, Chris Shays, or Jody Olsen would be good candidates to run the agency. Latest: For the record, Peace Corps has no comment on the rumors. |
