Wasmer students collect school supplies for Kenyan students

Eight boxes of school supplies that Wasmer Elementary School students collected are being mailed to Kenya this week, said Principal Betty Desaire.

High school students in Keroke, Kenya, will use the supplies. Allison Keyser, whose Peace Corps assignment is in Kenya, needs the supplies for her students.

Her mother, Cheryl Keyser, teaches English Language Learner students at Wasmer.

Grand Island students donated supplies, including notebook paper, pencils, tape, books, and erasers, Desaire said.

Wasmer students participated in the project during American Education Week, Nov. 14 through Nov. 20.

Allison Keyser has been stationed in Kenya for a year and a half and will be there for another year with the Peace Corps. She works with approximately 30 high school students, Desaire said.

Wasmer Elementary School's business partner, Home Federal Bank, is assisting with the project by paying to mail the packages to Kenya.

RPCV safe after Terrorist Attack RPCV Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, the U.S. consul general in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia survived Monday's attack on the consulate without injury. Five consular employees and four others were killed. Abercrombie-Winstanley, the first woman to hold the position, has been an outspoken advocate of rights for Arab women and has met with Saudi reformers despite efforts by Saudi leaders to block the discussions.
