Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Steve Compton can be contacted at scomptonausfamilydnet
Country of Service: Nicaragua
Training Group: Ponce, Puerto Rico
Cities you served in: Totogalpa,
Arrival Year: 1971
Departure Year: 1973
Work Description:
I was an agricultural generalist working with a small farmer loan program through the Banco Nacional. My wife Martha worked with women in our village on health and hygine education. My work was to encourage green revolution style ag improvements. But then, after a year of semi-drought, I started working with local agronomist to encourage less capital intensive ag inputs such as higher-yielding synthetic seeds which could be saved and planted again next year in the traditional method rather than hybrid seed, organic vegetable gardenting and a potable water project. After the Dec. 1973 earthquake we returned to run a refugee camp for about 6 months.
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Immedicately after returning I trained in yoga and meditation for two years. Then in 1975 went to work with the Illinois Migrant Council for 5 years. In the 1980s moved to Minnesota and set up a job bank in an innercity neighborhood. Then spent 13 years editing neighborhood newspapers. Went back to school in the late 1990s to study Oriental medicine. Now I am a licensed acupunturist, Chinese herbalist and Asian bodywork therapist in a group practice.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
Every day I learned more than I taught.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
Ron Dudley, David Becker, Martha Compton, others who were in Nicaragua 1971-73.
