1966: Pamela Gibson Keesler served in Afghanistan in LashkarGah, Kabul (briefly) beginning in 1966
Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Pamela Gibson Keesler can be contacted at keeslerawmichdedu
Country of Service: Afghanistan
Training Group: Group IX - Austin, TX
Cities you served in: LashkarGah, Kabul (briefly)
Arrival Year: 1966
Departure Year: 1969
Work Description: TEFL Teacher, LashkarGah High School
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
2 daughters, Liz and Sarah ('74, '76)
taught high school French in Kalamazoo from '69 - 74, taught ESL at
Western Michigan University from 1975 - present,-- served briefly under
another Afghanistan RPCV, Walter Davison, from an earlier group -- maybe
IV? Program at WMU is called CELCIS and has been a great place to work.
Now I think about retiring, tho.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I tend to forget the difficulties, the amoebic dysentery, the juies, the
smells, the dirt. I miss the place a lot. It was hard, but great. I feel helpless
now and entertain thoughts of going back sometime to help out with the
rebuilding efforts.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
Others from Lash from 66-69, others from Group IX ( not cycle IX -- that
was a lot later)!

Aug. '05 -- since last posting, I have retired from full-time teaching, and am divorced from Jim Keesler. I'm in touch with a former student still in LashkarGah and finding myself in sort of culture shock at finding computers and mobile phones in my old home town! I'd love hearing from others who were in groups 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and any others!

LOL, can't imagine those computers and mobile phones chugging around lash either...
drop me a line if you get time...seems like we should be able to do SOMETHING about the mess we're in worldwide...
wishing you all the best,
eileen

Oh, my goodness! Eileen!
How are you? Where are you? Still Illinois? It has been a lot of years since I last saw you.
I'm doing well, recently outfitted with a new knee and learning to walk again instead of lurching. Glad to be without male attachments at present. I moved out of the house, leaving Jim, Liz, cat, and a huge mess behind. Jim remarried and is living with his "soul mate" outside of Jackson, MI -- and commuting to his job in Kalamazoo -- roughly 70 miles each way -- every day.
Meantime, I got custody of Peggy, the family cat. Liz and Sarah have relocated to Vermilion, OH (on L. Erie, between Sandusky and Cleveland.) Liz is working as a photographer/sales person for a company that does church directories. Sarah is an air traffic controller at Cleveland Center -- an all-air control center (no airport) located in Oberlin. Jim's old house has been turned over to the resident rodents, I guess. No one lives in it, and the lack of repairs and accumulations of junk make it mouse-friendly.
Love to hear from you!
Pam

Bon jour Mme!
Of course you know, but everyone else - I'm a former HS student in independent study French
(After Belgium, I still can speak French, and Dutch, as well.)
I'm testing - CSET - to get credential for elem. classroom, as there is not much call for a music teacher in California. I could move - is the Peace Corps a silly idea? I keep having it!
Been singing Opera San Jose, San Francisco Opera extra chorus, other local companies and all. Awel.
