'Newsday' Opens a Foreign Bureau in Pakistan

NEW YORK Newsday announced today that is has opened a new bureau in Islamabad, Pakistan.

James Rupert has been named bureau chief. He will cover other regions in the area including Afghanistan, Iran, and India. Previously, Rupert was Newsday’s deputy foreign editor, based in the paper’s Melville, N.Y. headquarters. He speaks French, Russian, Arabic, and Persian.

“Pakistan is a vital location in a vital region, which is currently under-covered by the American news media,” said Roy Gutman, foreign editor, in a statement. “It is important as a story in its own right, but it also serves as a jump off point for reporting on South Asia and as a listening post for the Islamic world.”

Newsday spokesman Stu Vincent confirmed this new outpost will be a Newsday bureau -- not a general Tribune Co. bureau. Tribune, which owns Newsday, recently announced that it would consolidate all of its papers' Washington, D.C., correspondents into one office.

Newsday maintains foreign bureaus, generally staffed by one correspondent, in Beijing, Beirut, Mexico City, and Johannesburg, and the paper has staff in Jerusalem and Moscow.

RPCV safe after Terrorist Attack RPCV Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, the U.S. consul general in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia survived Monday's attack on the consulate without injury. Five consular employees and four others were killed. Abercrombie-Winstanley, the first woman to hold the position, has been an outspoken advocate of rights for Arab women and has met with Saudi reformers despite efforts by Saudi leaders to block the discussions.

Is Gaddi Leaving? Rumors are swirling that Peace Corps Director Vasquez may be leaving the administration. We think Director Vasquez has been doing a good job and if he decides to stay to the end of the administration, he could possibly have the same sort of impact as a Loret Ruppe Miller.
