Vacancy: Country Director
Location: Guinea-Bissau, West Africa
Project: Building cashew processing enterprises for export
Description: This is a 3-year-old project implemented by an international small business development organization whose aim is to build small and medium companies within Guinea-Bissau that specialize in processing raw cashew nuts into finished cashew kernels for export. The country is currently the world's 5th largest grower of cashew nuts, but exports
nearly all of them in raw form. The objective is to develop a processing industry to capture the value added from the finished kernels, which are a valuable internationally-traded commodity. The new project also has a component for promoting seedlings of improved varieties of cashew trees by training farmers to operate for-profit decentralized nurseries. Guinea-Bissau is a very underdeveloped country with few amenities, but the people are pleasant to the extent that visitors typically return repeatedly. The main challenges are meeting the quality and quantity standards of the international cashew kernel market, and transferring the necessary management skills and attitudes to local partner businesses. The occupant will receive support from similar programs in neighboring countries.
Duties: Recruit and manage staff; develop relationships with private business people, government officials, and donors; plan activities
toward achievement of project goals; write periodic activity reports and file required financial reporting;
Qualifications: Some experience in business, a relevant graduate degree (business, commerce, international development with a business
component, etc.), work experience in Africa or other developing environment, Portuguese or Spanish language, management experience of
personnel and budgets preferably in a project, ability to relocate to Bissau.
