EAST LANSING, Mich. - Vice President Richard B. Cheney will speak at Michigan State University's undergraduate student convocation Friday, May 3.

The convocation is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Cheney will receive an honorary doctor of laws.

"MSU is honored to have Vice President Richard Cheney address our undergraduates, students who soon will be following in the footsteps of our country's leaders in business, government, the sciences, education, the arts and humanitarian endeavors," said MSU President Peter McPherson.

Tickets will be required for admission to the convocation. Each graduating senior will have three tickets, one for themselves and two for family members or guests. Family and guest seating will be in the general seating area on a first-come, first-served basis. Graduates will be seated in a designated reserved seating area. Graduating seniors wishing to sit in the designated seating area must be dressed in graduation caps and gowns.

Students, their families and guests, and members of the public will need to arrive at Breslin Center by 10 a.m. Guests should enter the building through gates A, B and D. Individuals and bags will be subject to search at the point of entrance to the facility. Metal detectors will be used.

A limited food and beverage menu will be available at concession stands inside the facility. Large bags and coolers will not be allowed in the center.

Convocation attendees are urged to take advantage of the free shuttle bus system, with service from the parking lot at Mount Hope Road and Farm Lane, the parking ramp at the Communication Arts and Science Building and the parking lot south of Spartan Stadium to the Breslin Center. Shuttle buses will run every 10 to 15 minutes.

Cheney is the fourth sitting vice president to speak at the university. Previous vice presidents to speak at MSU were Alben W. Barkley in 1950, Richard M. Nixon in 1957 and Hubert H. Humphrey in 1966.

At 8 p.m. Friday, May 3, Nobel Prize for medicine recipient Peter Doherty, a member in the immunology department at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, will deliver the advanced degree ceremony address at Breslin Center.

This ceremony recognizes candidates for doctoral, educational specialist and master's degrees. Admission tickets will be not issued for this ceremony.

Please call your Senators and ask them to support the President's proposed $27 Million budget increase for the Peace Corps for FY2006 and ask them to oppose the elimination of Perkins loans that benefit Peace Corps volunteers from low-income backgrounds. Peace Corps Calendar: Tempest in a Teapot? Bulgarian writer Ognyan Georgiev has written a story which has made the front page of the newspaper "Telegraf" criticizing the photo selection for his country in the 2005 "Peace Corps Calendar" published by RPCVs of Madison, Wisconsin. WWII participants became RPCVs Read about two RPCVs who participated in World War II in very different ways long before there was a Peace Corps. Retired Rear Adm. Francis J. Thomas (RPCV Fiji), a decorated hero of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 at 100. Mary Smeltzer (RPCV Botswana), 89, followed her Japanese students into WWII internment camps. We honor both RPCVs for their service.

Bush's FY06 Budget for the Peace Corps The White House is proposing $345 Million for the Peace Corps for FY06 - a $27.7 Million (8.7%) increase that would allow at least two new posts and maintain the existing number of volunteers at approximately 7,700. Bush's 2002 proposal to double the Peace Corps to 14,000 volunteers appears to have been forgotten. The proposed budget still needs to be approved by Congress.
