[Excerpt]
Taylor McLean is a young lady from Lansing spending time in the Peace Corps in Ghana, trying to teach young students about AIDS and working with farmers and their fish ponds. She wrote recently that the work days are long and hot but very satisfying. She often returns from her visits carrying fresh fruit from the generous local people -- pineapples, coconuts, oranges, all very delicious and tree ripened.
Shy boy listened
One of my favorite stories she sent was of her enjoying cool breeze outside of her home one late afternoon. She was out on her porch to write a few letters and listen to music on her CD player. She happened to look up and there was a young, skinny boy wearing a straw hat and carrying a long wooden pole driving a small herd of cows down the road. He seemed to linger closer and closer to her porch urging the animals to graze on the nearby grass as he tried listening to the music from her CD. When he saw her watching him, he looked embarrassed. She smiled and turned up the volume so he could hear better. Eventually he reclined on a nearby wall surrounding her house and listened to the music. When the music ended, he prodded the cows to move and left without saying a word.
Taylor said she had several more encounters with the boy and learned that his name was Zacharia. She felt a strong connection to the small, silent boy and she looked forward to hearing his cows move through the tall dry grass every afternoon. This was just one of the more typical days in her stay in Ghana.
Taylor's mother, Linda McLean is leaving in April to visit with her. She has agreed to take with her any donations you might like to make for the purchase of much needed school supplies for the children. Call her at 533-7504 or contact Taylor in Ghana at PO Box 3820, Kumasi, Ghana, West Africa or e-mail tayinghana@yahoo.com to know more.
