A Rough Day
Dan writes...
Thursday started off like a normal day -- opened up our bedroom door, walked into the living room to receive our daily morning yelling from Nana ("you sleep too much, Are you sick? Your clothes aren't ironed, Your shoes aren't shined!"), we had our daily breakfast of oatmeal, sausage bread and a cup of instant Nescafe. Then I got ready and walked to school. Azerbaijanis have an interesting habit of heckling me as I walk down the street. Walking here has been described as a visiting hockey player serving a penalty in the penalty box. But, I made it to school and began teaching my classes. My last class of the day was going quite smoothly until the Vice Minister os Education in Xanlar decided to interrupt my class. First, we had to move into the nicest classroom of the school before her arrival, and then the students began practicing the text that they always recite when any school administrator or special guest comes to observe their class. When this woman entered my class, she sat in the back with my two assistant principals and fellow English teachers. Ten minutes into my lesson, her driver began talking profusely. I stopped teaching and told them if they didn't stop talking, I would kick them out. The assistant principals looked like they were going to cry, they were so scared by my comments and the Vice Minister's reaction.
After class, the Vice Minister gave me a one hour lecture about Armenian aggression. I don't know what happened in this conversation, but I cracked. I began responding to her interrigation and propaganda with the truth...
