Demerly will serve as second vice president of the CEA in the 2005-2006 academic year, and then will become the first vice president in the 2006-2007 year and will be program chairman for the annual CEA conference.
In the 2007-2008 academic year, he will serve as CEA president.
"I see it as an honor to be chosen by my colleagues," Demerly stated. "I expect to meet their expectations and do a good job."
Demerly has been president of the Michigan College English Association for the last two years. He joined the MCEA 24 years ago when he began teaching at HFCC.
He earned master's and bachelor's degrees in English from Michigan State University. After college, he joined the Army for two and a half years.
Ten days after leaving the Army, Demerly left to teach in a small village of 400 people on the island of Borneo in Malaysia with the Peace Corps.
"Being a part of the Peace Corps gave me a sense of what it means to be a citizen of the world," said Demerly
"It taught me to appreciate America and the American way. But it was more about being a part of the human race, and learning about other wonderful values and other cultures."
Demerly continues to correspond with some of the students — and for the first time by e-mail last year.
"I felt like I left with more than I gave, which is typical of doing service work," he commented.
"The gratitude is yours to help them."
He was the 1992 recipient of HFCC's Faculty Lectureship Award.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
