In the Tanks
Mar 26, 2005 - National Journal
Although Judy Wurtzel has been immersed in education policy since the early 1990s, she realizes she still has a lot to learn. And now she is taking her experience to the Aspen Institute, where she will be a senior fellow in the think tank's program on education and society. She plans to do research on ways to improve teacher quality at the high school level.
Wurtzel has spent the past six years as executive director of Learning First Alliance, a partnership of 12 national education associations. Before that, she was a senior adviser in the Clinton Education Department, where she worked on reauthorization of the special-education law. Since leaving government service, Wurtzel says she's gained a greater appreciation for the complexity of education reform. "I think the tendency, when you're sitting in Washington, working with Congress and the administration, is to see the federal government as the driver. But we know in education, that's only one piece of the many influences that are affecting what's essentially a state and local enterprise."
Wurtzel, 44, is a Richmond, Va., native, and a Yale graduate. She got her first experience in education teaching English as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, where she also met her husband, who was teaching French in the same school. She returned to the U.S. to get a law degree from New York University, and later worked as a lawyer, before eventually finding her way back to education. -G.S.

| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
