Class act Former Washington teacher shares her Peace Corps memories
Mar 16, 2005 - Chicago Daily Herald
In her long tenure as a teacher in Mundelein District 75, Barbara Gosh was always open to trying something new and different.
From 1967 to 2000, the Ingleside resident taught a variety of subjects at different grade levels. But an adventure outside the classroom had been on her mind from her pre-teaching days.
"Then I retired and joined the Peace Corps. I always wanted to do it," said Gosh.
She returned recently to Washington School in Mundelein to share the story of her travels.
Gosh became a Peace Corps volunteer stationed in a village in northern Thailand in 2001 and 2002. The agency was founded in 1944 to provide help in foreign countries.
"You get a choice. Peace Corps said, 'You want to go to Thailand?' I said, that's fine with me," she said.
Today, more than 7,700 volunteers live and work in more than 70 countries.
Not surprisingly, Gosh was a teacher in what were fairly primitive conditions. She gave a hands-on math lesson by having the kids collect stones in yogurt cups.
Her point in returning to Washington School was to show students here how things are different in various parts of the world. They wore Thai clothing and learned a Thai dance.
Gosh had to return four months earlier than expected because of illness and is now considered a RPCV - returned Peace Corps volunteer.
"Some things you do sooner and some things you do later," she said of her dream.

And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
