64 new Peace Corps volunteers were sworn in at the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theatre on 5 April.
Volunteers completed 11-week orientation programme. The programme envisaged their learning of either Uzbek or Russian language, familiarisation with Uzbek culture and traditions, and technical training.
The group of Peace Corps volunteers will teach English in public secondary schools and universities of Uzbekistan. They will also work in the system of healthcare and public organisations throughout the country.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Uzbekistan John Purnell swore in the volunteers on behalf of the US government.
???I have not personally served as a volunteer, but for me, volunteers and the Peace Corps are a very important heritage of former American President John Kennedy,??? said Ambassador Purnell. ???These people do a very important job to improve mutual understanding between the nations of the world,??? he added.
Representatives of the ministries of higher and secondary specialized education, justice, and healthcare also participated in the ceremony.
Among the other guests of the ceremony were the families, with whom the Peace Corps volunteers have stayed for the past nine weeks, and representatives of partner organisations, with which the volunteers will be working for the following two years in Uzbekistan.
The Coordinator of the Peace Corps in Uzbekistan Jeffrey Millington said the Peace Corps programme in Uzbekistan was a bridge between the two nations of the United States and Uzbekistan, and had a positive effect on strengthening relations between the two countries.
Peace Corps has been functioning in Uzbekistan for 13 years in accordance with the Agreement, signed by the governments of Uzbekistan and the US in 1992. Since then, over 500 citizens of the United States have served throughout Uzbekistan.
