Connecticut Republicans split with Shays over DeLay comments

(Washington-AP, Apr. 11, 2005 8:31 PM) _ A day after Republican Congressman Christopher Shays of Connecticut said House Majority Leader Tom DeLay should step down from his leadership position, the state's other two GOP moderates said it's too soon to make such a call.

Rob Simmons and Nancy Johnson, Connecticut's two other Republicans in the House, said today that they may disagree with some of DeLay's decisions, but his ethics questions should be decided by the House Ethics Committee.

Shays said yesterday that DeLay should step down as House leader because his continuing ethics problems are hurting the Republican party and GOP lawmakers who are up for re-election.

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican from California, says Shays is out of touch with the mainstream of the Republican majority in Congress.

He says, quote, "jerks like Chris Shays," end quote, get attention by being disloyal to fellow Republicans.

Shays said he's an effective member of Congress because he does his job and is willing to take the consequences.

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
