About 200 family members and friends came together Friday to honor Jason Hendrix at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on Freedom Boulevard.
Army Staff Sgt. Hendrix, 28, a former Watsonville resident, was killed in combat Feb. 16 in ArRamadi, Iraq.
Choking back tears, Melanie Massera, Hendix's aunt, shared her memories of the man she once cared for when he was a child.
[Excerpt]
U.S. Rep. Sam Farr (D-Carmel) attended the service and presented the family with a flag he had flown over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 22 in honor of Hendrix.
"I didn't know Jason, but I have tears in my eyes," he said. "As you can tell, we have had too many of these memorial services in Watsonville and Santa Cruz County."
Farr praised Hendrix for his dedication to serving his country, making the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life.
"Jason left here a soldier, and he returns here today as a veteran," said Farr, who first learned of Hendrix after an Army policy turned over his body to his father in Oklahoma based on age.
A possible bill to require military personnel to indicate their final wishes is being discussed in Congress, Farr said.
