IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) creates topical website for up-to-the-minute action on Canada's horrific seal hunt, which reopens April 12 in Newfoundland.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) announced the launch of a website - www.StoptheSealHunt.com - designed to help people learn how they can help stop the current seal hunt in Canada. The website was developed by IFAW in conjunction with the organization's technology partner, Kintera(r) Inc. (NASDAQ:KNTA), to assist in stopping this senseless killing of baby seals.

"Many people mistakenly think Canada stopped hunting baby seals decades ago," said Fred O'Regan, IFAW's president and CEO. "But the size of Canada's modern, commercial hunt is bigger now than it has been in 50 years. The Internet offers our organization a way to disseminate information in real-time to help fight the hunt while it is underway."

Each spring the entire Northwest Atlantic harp seal population migrates to the East Coast of Newfoundland to mate, give birth and nurse their young. In one of nature's great wildlife spectacles, thousands of seals are born on the pristine ice floes off eastern Canada in early March.

The spring leg of the commercial hunting season began Tuesday, March 29 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where the quota of 90,000 animals has already reached. But the hunt reopens on April 12 on the Front (Newfoundland). Seal pups may be legally killed once they are weaned from their mother and begin to moult their fluffy white coats - as young as 12 days old. Hunters were expected to kill more than 300,000 seals by May 15, as part of a federal three-year plan, allowing sealers to harvest a total of 975,000 seals since 2003.

IFAW is the only organization in the world to consistently observe and document the hunt each year. For the last 36 years, IFAW has brought media and government officials from around the world to view the hunt firsthand. This year, European parliamentarians and media from around the globe are observing the hunt with IFAW's help.

Added Regan, "This horrific killing of baby seals will not stop unless an outraged public makes their voice heard. I urge everyone sickened by the hunt to visit www.StoptheSealHunt.com to take action."

With Kintera's web-based tools, the 13-country IFAW organization can easily maintain all of the various areas of the www.StoptheSealHunt.com website with local content and language to create a truly global web platform that is customized at each country level. Featuring Kintera's robust Content Management System (CMS), the website enables IFAW staff to easily update content and keep the site's information fresh and active without HTML experience or the need for additional IT personnel. Kintera technology also provides the software platform for the organization's main website at www.ifaw.org.

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
