Laity share God's mission
Ten new lay missioners go forth to serve the poor and suffering in Asia, Africa and Latin America—by Sue Marble Cuthbert, M.L.M.
Apr 22, 2005 - God's mission has a church. Mission is evangelization. Evangelization is a mutual discovery and sharing of God’s presence in our midst!
[Excerpt]
The new missioners and their destinations are:
Africa:
Chris and Kevin Cahalan, from New Orleans, La., said good-bye to their four grown children and are joining fellow Maryknoll missioners in Zimbabwe.
"Doing this is as ultimate a proof as Chris and I can give our kids of the faith, confidence and joy we have in them," Kevin says. Before working the last 25 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Kevin spent years overseas, first as a Peace Corps volunteer in India, then two tours of duty in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine and finally as a program director for Catholic Relief Services in Latin America. He hopes to work with street children in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital. Many of these children are runaways or orphans who lost their parents to AIDS. "With 35 percent of the adult population in Zimbabwe suffering from AIDS, it is almost guaranteed to be a pivotal part of our ministry," he says.
Chris, who trained as a nurse and midwife, worked for the last 15 years as a hospital chaplain in New Orleans. "I am here now to stand with the people of another culture through the ups and downs of their daily lives, to increase my awareness and theirs of our identity as children of God," she says.

 | Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
